Papa Bieman - Adam's father is in his forties. A man with a wide forehead and frown lines, he wears his spectacles halfway down his nose. An immigrant with a Yiddish accent, he is a proud and principled man. Too sick to work, he has a terrible cough and raspy breathing.
Mama Bieman - Adam's mother is in her thirties. An immigrant woman with a Yiddish accent, she is slim with a narrow waist and wears her wavy hair tied back in a bun. Kind and caring, she likes to cook and look after her family. Mama is also resourceful when Papa cannot work.
Bubbe Bieman - Adam's grandmother is a 60-year-old woman. An immigrant with a Yiddish accent, she has hunched shoulders, a gaunt face, deep forehead lines and wears her hair in a bun. She and Mama love to cook for the children, who are their pleasures and their treasures.
Farmer Friedland - an immigrant from the Old Country. He has wild black hair and a bushy beard. He is a strong and imposing man, whose livelihood is taken away. As a result, he has to climb higher up the ladder during a bad storm to reach more apples on the tree. But he slips down and badly gashes his leg. He gets gruff and angry when his apples are stolen, and he is initially unable to forgive Adam.
Mrs. Friedland - the farmer's wife. She is a caring woman, who asks the farmer to forgive the young boy.
Miss Eliot - a dedicated teacher. She is tall and slim with an attractive face. But her angular features reveal a woman who is both stern and kind. She wears her light brown hair in a bun.
Doctor Maxwell/Rabbi Solomon - plays both parts. Doctor is a tall man with a gaunt face. He has a thick head of hair, receding at the sides. He also has a goatee beard. The doctor is always prepared in an emergency. Rabbi Solomon - a wise and kind older man with gray hair and a gray beard. He wears a pair of half-moon spectacles halfway down his nose.
Red Bird/Violinist - the red bird represents Adam's conscience and is played by a violinist.
