In a plantation house, a family celebrates the sixty-fifth birthday of Big Daddy, as they sentimentally dub him. The mood is somber, despite the festivities, because a number of evils poison the gaiety: greed, sins of the past and desperate, clawing hopes for the future spar with one another as the knowledge that Big Daddy is dying slowly makes the rounds. Maggie, Big Daddy's daughter-in-law, wants to give him the news that she's finally become pregnant by Big Daddy's favorite son, Brick, but Brick won't cooperate in Maggie's plans and prefers to stay in a mild alcoholic haze the entire length of his visit. Maggie has her own interests at heart in wanting to become pregnant, of course, but she also wants to make amends to Brick for an error in judgment that nearly cost her her marriage. Swarming around Maggie and Brick are their intrusive, conniving relatives, all eager to see Maggie put in her place and Brick tumbled from his position of most-beloved son. By evening's end, Maggie's ingenuity, fortitude and passion will set things right, and Brick's love for his father, never before expressed, will retrieve him from his path of destruction
BRICK (M/late 20's-mid 30's): Husband of Maggie; Once an outstanding athlete; Youngest son of Big Daddy and Big Mama; Former football star that has not lost his physique despite his rampant alcoholism. While the suicide of his friend has made him wholly indifferent to Maggie or anyone who isn't the bottle, Brick's faade is beginning to crumble. His distant and nonchalant nature hides an angry man who is deeply haunted by his past and his complicated relationship with his late friend.
GOOPER (M/30's-40's): Brick's older brother; Sometimes called "Brother Man"; He will stop at nothing to impress upon and take advantage of Big Daddy's illness to secure the estate. He flaunts his successes and superiority over his brother due to Brick's failed career, drinking habits, and inability to start a family.
BIG DADDY (M/50's-60's): Conflicted, Blunt; Desires to regain his control after a long sickness; Wealthy cotton tycoon and overseer of ten million dollars' worth of rich, productive farmland. Having cheated death after his cancer scare, Big Daddy has found a renewed passion for life and has resolved to live it by his own terms. He is a fierce and relentless man who has the ability to command the room in an instant with his high energy and powerful disposition.
REVEREND TOOKER (M/mid 40's-mid 50's): The family's parish Pastor; Seeking to cut himself a slice of the Pollitt family fortune.
DOC BAUGH (M/mid 40's-late 50's): The family doctor.
LACEY (M/late 20's-late 40's): A male servant.
