About the play:
The story takes place in 1950 while America is recovering from the after effects of World War II, witnessing the start of the Cold War, and bracing itself for the Civil Rights movement. CRUMBS FROM THE TABLE OF JOY is a memory play told through the eyes of Ernestine, a seventeen-year-old African-American female, whose family is dealing with their own realities of change. After the death of his wife, a man named Godfrey Crump finds religion and decides to move his family to Brooklyn, New York. Their new life begins with only Godfrey and his two daughters, Ernestine and Ermina. However, the three are quickly joined by Godfrey's wife's sister, Lily, who is a Communist; and Godfrey's new wife, Gerte, a German woman he met on the subway. It truly is a time of change.
