Summary of the Play:
The play is set in the 1950s, in someplace very far north where winters are dark, cold, and snowy. Norway, perhaps. It is, in many ways, a play about privilege.
Nora and Torvald Helmer are a couple, married 9 years, on the brink of Torvald's major career change that will move them up in social status. Nora has been hiding information from Torvald about the source of the loan she took out in secret several years ago to help Torvald recover his health in Italy, saying it was a gift from her now deceased father. In fact, she forged her father's signature on the loan papers. In his new position as bank manager, Torvald has dismissed a childhood acquaintance, Nils Krogstad, the man who had given Nora the loan, and who has discovered the forged signature. In his anger about losing his position, Krogstad blackmails Nora into helping him get his job back. But Nora has already asked Torvald to hire her old friend, Kristine Linde, a widow newly-arrived in town, in his place. When Torvald eventually learns the secret, Nora is forced to confront the realities of her marriage and make the life-altering decision that made theatrical history.
Please note: The characters marked with an asterisk (*) can be any ethnicity and we strongly encourage actors of color to audition; the more diverse the cast, the stronger the point about privilege the play will make.
Nora Helmer - Mid-to-late 30s. Nora is flirtatious and a little flighty, child-like. She is very self-involved, but charmingly so. Nora loves her children and her husband, but she seems unaware of the harsh realities of life. It is as though she is "playing house," not really living her life.
*Kristine Linde - About the same age as Nora - perhaps looks a little older. Kristine was an old friend of Nora's in their hometown. Her life has not been as easy as Nora's, however. She married a man with money but when he died, he left her with nothing. Now she has come to Nora to see if she can help her to get a good, stable job. She is very grounded in reality and a foil to Nora's flightiness.
*Helene - Should look to be about twenty or more years older than Nora. Helene was Nora's nanny and is now the family's housekeeper and nanny to Nora's children. (Note: This role combines the characters of Helene and Anna.)
