"During Christmas 1183, the aging, but vigorous King Henry II hosts a family gathering. He let his wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, out of prison in another castle for attempting to overthrow him years before. Princess Alais, his mistress who is betrothed to his son Richard, is there to greet her brother King Philip of France. Philip has demanded that Alais either marry Richard or have her dowry returned. His three living sons, Richard, Geoffrey, and John, are all vying for his throne.
Henry doesn't count on the greed each son has for his throne nor the scheming Eleanor so enjoys. Like a chess match, Henry and Eleanor, attack and counter attack to have their favored son inherit the kingdom. Lies, manipulation, trickery, and utter disrespect for their parents lead the three sons to cross and double-cross each other. Henry eventually locks the three sons in the wine cellar so he can go to Rome for an annulment that will allow him to marry Alais and have more sons. 'The Lion in Winter' is a dramatic comedy that uses a range of styles such as satire, irony, personal insults, lack of empathy, slapstick, and clownish behavior to convey both funny and poignant moments.
