Hi my name is Shaiking Mathis .Recently our responsibilities included developing, writing, directing, editing and producing Chicago Chronicles The Robert "Yummy" Sandifer Story a current production about an 11 year old that was murdered execution style by gang members. Certain elements of the events that take place in the movie are fictional. The movie represents factual events that are particular to the Chicago area.
The cast and crew of the movie come from diverse backgrounds which the movie director takes pride in. My goal was to show viewers that we all have something to contribute I included actors from all of the protected classes: race, color, religion, national origin, sex or sexual orientation, disability, and familial status. The casting call for this production brought in adult actors with a diverse set of acting skills. The dedication and commitment of the adult actors made it easier for younger actors to take direction and feed off of their energy. This made shooting each scene rewarding. The youth that were involved in the project learned how to maintain a strong work ethic. They had to manage their time, remember lines, get into character and improvise while working on this project. The cast of the movie come from Chicago, Evanston and Skokie.
This is a story about a 11 year old gang member who is coerced by older gang members into committing a string of murders. He also committed other felonious crimes. Yummy is then killed by the older gang members in order to silence him before the authorities could find out who sent "Yummy" on those murder missions. The story lines used in the movie are based on true events. The purpose for creating this particular project is to expose Evanston , and Chicago's troubled youth to using media to tell a story and how to solve conflict without the use of violence. The average urban youth can identify with events presented in this story either through personal experience or through the environment they are forced to live in. This projects allows them to look at their everyday experiences through a creative lens instead of a destructive lens. This form of conflict resolution is artistic, promotes positive expression and teaches them how to be productive by using sound moral judgment.
