"To Avenge" tells the story of Vera and Taarna - Taarna is an unassuming, late teen to mid 20's female who, by choice, enters the world of vigilante justice. Taarna is outraged when she sees how another young woman, Vera is treated by the system after being sexually assaulted by a group of four young men. Two of Vera's attackers are brothers from a wealthy and well-connected family who use their power and influence to have the charges dropped.
Taarna doesn't know Vera, so she seems to pick up her sense of vigilante justice, at first, from a sense of disenchantment with a broken legal system - then later is inspired by the feeling she gets from delivering cosmic retribution. In other words, Taarna is not the kind of person anyone would suspect of these outlaw actions. Furthermore, she has no readily apparent motive.
Taarna's feelings cannot be written off as mere sympathy, nor can her actions be described as getting revenge solely for Vera. In Taarna's mind, if the system won't obtain justice, she will. It's not about hatred - it's colder, more methodical and calculating. It's a common sense approach to a simple formula - If she doesn't take action, who's to stop these criminals from doing it again? So Taarna takes the steps necessary to ensure that can't happen. She plays it safe, taking her time - targeting each of the attackers individually, getting to know their routines and delivering her unique brand of justice with a calm, stealthy - almost detached demeanor.
Qualifications: Must be comfortable with and capable of handling the raw emotion of a violent attack/assault scene which includes rough handling, bad language and such displays typically associated with such situations. Likewise, in the scenes after the attack, you must be able to convey a severely traumatized young woman trying to cope and pick up the pieces.
It's crucial that the acting be believable and "feels real". This will require a deep, emotional commitment to your character and her circumstances. This role is crucial to the story. Those with extensive/proven acting experience will receive priority consideration. We will be looking at your IMDb and requesting your current demo reel. If you do not have those, we may request a video taped audition.
Character background: Vera is a young woman who is sexually assaulted during an off-season visit to the shore. Returning to her family's small beach house one evening, she is followed and brutally attacked by a group of four men. Her physical wounds are few and heal fairly quickly, but in the weeks and months that follow the assault, she feels victimized again as her attackers are caught then released due to "lack of evidence". Behind the scenes political influence exerted by the accused men's wealthy parents, results in the charges being dropped. It becomes a "he said, she said" scenario and Vera is stunned to learn her attackers will go free.
Vera is a strong woman who's fiercely independent and after a short stay with her parents, she returns home and to her job - looking to regain her life and some sense of normalcy. In the weeks following her attack, Vera learns that the charges have been dismissed against all four men who assaulted her. While initially supportive, when her attackers make the headlines proclaiming and their innocence and end up having the charges dropped and going free, Vera's senses her coworkers now seem to have doubts about what really happened that night. With the loss of support from her peers in the workplace, she becomes withdrawn and melancholy. Understandably, she becomes increasingly guarded and isolated - almost fearful of men. Vera stops going out with friends, quits her favorite activities and even resorts to having her groceries delivered rather than take trips to the store. With the exception of going to work, she no longer leaves her home.
Unknown to Vera, someone is watching - a mysterious woman who believes what happened is unacceptable and wants to make things right by any means necessary. She refuses to live in a world where people like Vera's attackers commit terrible crimes then go free with a smile on their faces. Over the course of the film, while Taarna takes bold action, Vera shows her strength and resilience in a more subtle way. While she was the victim of a unspeakable crime, Vera chooses to not remain so. We see her slowly, but progressively leaving her "dark place" behind, opting to live again and regain that part of herself she had buried beneath the pain.
With subtle nods to small milestones in her healing, we get the sense that Vera is going to be alright - which is far more than can be said of the men who attacked her.
