(Musical) 2006-2007 Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale The Advanced Cadet Program Music Director: Jeffrey R. Smith Philadelphia PA

Many of the boys in the Philadelphia Boys Choir begin their tenure as members of the Beginning or Advanced Cadets between the ages of 7 and 11. They learn the essentials of choral musicianship, such as diaphragmatic breathing, reading music, sight singing and music theory. Each Cadet program is designed to last one year per level.

Advanced Cadets

The objective of the Advanced Cadet program is to prepare a boy for his eventual membership in the Performing Choir. However, the long term goal is the enhancement of a boys total musical understanding, thus increasing his level of musical literacy and competency. It is important to note that participation in this program does not guarantee membership into the Philadelphia Boys Choir.

While in the Advanced Cadets, boys learn the basic elements of proper vocal production such as diaphragmatic breathing, posture, diction and tone quality , as well as the discipline required to be a member of the Performing Choir. Before moving on to become a Performing Choir candidate, each Advanced Cadet must be capable of holding his voice part accurately while simultaneously hearing three to seven different voice parts. Beginning with elementary exercises and progressing to more complex intervallic combinations, Advanced Cadets learn music theory and melodic sight singing using the traditional solfeggio syllables.

The Advanced Cadets perform at our annual Holiday and Spring concerts. Additionally, based upon individual proficiency with the selected repertoire, Advanced Cadets have the opportunity to participate in performances of the Nutcracker with the Pennsylvania Ballet.
